Our Pianos and Harpsichord

Our historic church is home to several acoustic pianos that can be found all around our building.  Our principal rehearsal instrument our Knabe grand piano in the Choir Room.  We also have two pianos in the Main Sanctuary; a Yamaha grand piano on the first floor, installed in 1962, and an upright Yamaha piano on the second floor adjacent to the Choir Loft.  The Choir will sometimes be accompanied from the loft by that piano and even an occasional hymn when appropriate.

Two of our pianos have humidifiers installed beneath them to help regulate their internal environment which increases the overall life, reduces tunings, and helps the instruments combat the variations in climate throughout the year. We also have a small upright piano in Woodruff Chapel.  Finally, First Church is home to two electric keyboards, which are used when more mobility is required, or the services move occasionally move outdoors.

Also in the main sanctuary, you'll find our beautiful harpsichord kit, lovingly built by Brad Elker in the 1960s.  This instrument is a single string harpsichord, that also has a lute and double stop option.
