Daniel A. Brownell

Minister of Music and Principal Organist- Daniel Brownell has been the Minister of Music and principal organist at First Church since March 2015. As a versatile professional musician, Dan has quite literally done it all- he has over 10 years experience as a church music director, he has over 10 years of experience as a licensed professional music educator, and he has many, many years of experience as a performance artist, music composer and arranger, and most recently, experience in music technology areas such as acoustic engineering, video editing and live-streaming tech development.

At First Church, he leads our diverse ensemble program which currently consists of six music ensembles ranging from kids to adults, and from bells to singing and more. He plays organ and piano (and sometimes guitar and ukulele) for our weekly Sunday services, special services throughout the year, and weddings and funerals. Along with the Music Ministry Committee, he envisions the long-term development and sustainability of the program, especially as we continue to move through the pandemic. He is always embracing opportunities to learn new things, and most recently he's guided the ensemble program through virtual music, a return to pandemic altered in-person activities, and helped the church establish and execute a live-streaming set-up for their 10am worship service..

Before coming to First Church, Dan served as the Director of Music at Terryville Congregational Church after having several positions while still in college, and Dan has also taught PK-Gr 12, instrumental, vocal and general music in the public and private schools of Connecticut. He's an active organ recitalist, most recently performing in the Greater Bridgeport's 2021 Pipescreams Concert, as well as a frequent performer in the Mulheron Organ Series at First Church. He holds degrees from Ithaca College (Bachelor of Music in Music Education with Organ/Sacred Music) and the University of Hartford, Hartt School of Music (Master of Music Education, with Concentration in Conducting).

Away from FCM, Dan enjoys performing music in non-professional capacities, writing music, hiking and exploring the great outdoors with his wife Amy and his dog, Kyrie.
