Why I Go to Church

Lenten Reading for Friday, March 22, 2013 :

Probably Not / Probably So

by David Gregory

Why I go to Church
To kill an hour or so on a Sunday
Probably not
To get dressed up and be seen
Probably not
To clear my head and recapture memories
Probably so
To find a time to be at peace
Probably so
To listen to myself sing
Probably not
To listen to the words
Probably so
To smile and “people watch”
Probably so
To see faces I’m comfortable with
Probably so
Even if I don’t know all the names?
Probably so
To hear the stories and lessons
Probably so
To find some inner calm, drift
Probably so
To let the music carry me up
Probably so
To be part of a community
Probably so
To not be afraid of tears
Probably so
To be important
Probably not
To sort out my world
Probably so
To accept and question
Probably so
To give and try to carry out
Probably so
To look at the faces, young and old
Probably so
To find a strength of spirit
Probably so
To wear my faith on my sleeve
Probably not
To wonder, wonder, wonder
Probably so
To hear myself and spot the bologna
Probably so
To wonder how some can be so unselfish
Probably so
To enjoy the pageantry
Probably so
To understand the whys
Probably so
To find the courage to talk with my heart
Probably so
To understand this list never ends
