Good Samaritan & Sam

A community journeying together

Samaritans and Israelites in Jesus' time each rejected each other and were treated as outcasts by the other group. Jesus' used a Samaritan in his Parable of the Good Samaritan to teach his followers about love in response to being asked "And who is my neighbor?" Breaking down the barriers to understanding and loving all of our neighbors is one way to follow this teaching from Jesus.

A community in Newton, Massachusetts is a beautiful example of this bridging the gap between people. Samantha Savitz is a two-year-old who is deaf and loves to talk with anyone who knows sign language. The neighbors of Sam and her family hired an instructor to teach an American Sign Language class to better include Sam in the fabric of the community.

For today's Lenten meditation, I would invite you to watch this ASL interpretation of "This Is Me" from The Greatest Showman.
