An Historic Day

June 26, 2015 (Jamie) – As I checked into my Synod hotel this morning, I turned on CNN in my room just as the Supreme Court ruling on Marriage Equality was being read. At Gathering, we were "prayerfully anticipating" this decision, but now that it has actually materialized, I find myself filled with emotions I cannot fully name.

UCC Coalition members and local organizations came together in a rally at noon at Cleveland City Hall (one block from Synod at the Convention Center) as Ohio's first same-gender Marriage Licenses were just being issued. Afterward we setup a Wedding Tent on the lawn across from Synod and UCC Clergy married two couples. It was such a privilege to be a part of this joyous and historic event.

Some of you may know that it was at Synod 10 years ago, July 4, 2005, that the United Church of Christ took the courageous step of being the first mainstream Christian denomination to enact Marriage Equality.

Filled with gratitude and joy, my soul journeyed back to October 2005 when Civil Unions first became legal in Connecticut and Walter and I were able to celebrate Holy Matrimony with our family and friends at our UCC Church in New Haven.

Walter and I are so grateful to the United Church of Christ, and to be members of First UCC, Milford, Thank you all, again, for your welcome, love, and support!

Blessings!
Jamie
