SrPF to Travel to Horton Center

Our youth group has enjoyed a great Spring Season of activities including: a downtown scavenger hunt, picnic table assembly competition, mountain meditation, public speaking 101 and mission trip training.

We are now preparing to travel to Horton Center in Gorham, NH, which is a part of the New Hampshire Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Horton Center perches atop Pine Mountain within White Mountain National Forest and is accessed by a road which is seasonably inaccessible due to snow. Horton Center's creation as a spiritual retreat began back in 1942 because of the vision and collaborations formed by Douglas Horton. Horton was a Congregational minister in Middletown, CT and other places, eventually served as Dean of Harvard Divinity School and was instrumental in forming the United Church of Christ.

Horton said, "Our purpose is to establish a place of meeting for Christian workers on the summit of Pine Mountain, which will give those who come there an opportunity to live an ordered spiritual life and learn the ways of worship and devotion under the best leadership and amidst the most beautiful of surroundings."

In 1947 the Connecticut Congregational Christian Church Youth Work Camps sent there first teams of youth to the mountain, literally hiking up to the summit. The youth shared in morning services, ate Spam, helped build the road, enjoyed square dances and started laying out the footprint of buildings where sojourners and campers would begin to see as their spiritual retreat. Visit to get a fuller view of our destination and to comb through the stories of those original youth workers from CT!

I am most looking forward to our youth and advisors having a mountaintop experience! We'll will share more after our Mission Trip and also in September when we lead Mission Trip Sunday Services.
