Five Years with an Open and Affirming Covenant!

June 2, 2024
Five years after first adopting our Open and Affirming covenant, First UCC Milford celebrated our anniversary with worship and a coffee hour reception...

In early June 2019, First UCC made a substantial commitment in its mission and public witness by overwhelmingly voting to adopt its Open and Affirming covenant.

The covenant welcomes and affirms "people of any age, cognitive or physical ability, culture, ethnicity, family structure, gender, gender identity or expression, marital status, nationality, race, sexual orientation, socio-economic standing, or spiritual tradition — no exceptions, no exclusions." As a covenant, the document is also a commitment amogn the congregation "to extend an extravagant welcome to all to participate fully in the life of our church".

Over the past five years, we have made strides in fulfilling our covenant, speaking out in matters of racial justice, LGBTQIA+ rights, advocating for people with neurodiversity, and taking part in many other initiatives. We continue to learn how to live into our covenant and address our own limitations as God's imperfect children. But by God's grace, we continue to see how the Spirit leads us to a more open and affirming future.
