Our Pianos and Harpsichord

Our historic church is home to several acoustic pianos that can be found all around our building.  Our principal rehearsal instrument our Knabe grand piano in the Choir Room, which is the primary instrument that our ensembles use to prepare their beautiful music each year.  We also have two pianos in the Main Sanctuary; a Yamaha grand piano on the first floor, installed in 1962, and an upright Yamaha piano on the second floor adjacent to the Choir Loft.  The Choir will sometimes be accompanied from that piano, and occasionally, Minister of Music Dan Brownell, will play hymns from the piano when musically advantageous.  Two of our pianos have humidifiers installed beneath them to help regulate their internal environment which increases the overall life, reduces tunings, and helps the instruments combat the often inhospitable environment at church. We also have a small upright piano in Woodruff Chapel.  Finally, First Church is home to two electric keyboards, which are used when more mobility is required, or the services move occasionally move outdoors.

Also in the main sanctuary, you'll find our beautiful harpsichord kit, lovingly build by Brad Elker in the 1960s.  This instrument is a single string harpsichord, that also has a lute and double stop option.  Minister of Music Dan Brownell will occasionally perform on this instrument in worship, and it has been used for several of our more recent Meetinghouse Chorale Concerts (Reformation and the two Messiah concerts).
