Senior Pastor - Rev. Adam calls himself an April Fool for Christ. Grounded in faith that God encounters us through our experiences of people, creation in general, and the biblical tradition, Adam preaches with one foot in the biblical story and the other in today's world with all its complications, brokenness, and humor. First U.C.C. Milford called Adam to be its 24th settled Senior Pastor after he served for 13 years as the church's Associate Pastor.
His responsibilties include working with the Deacons in leading worship and providing pastoral care; leading Confirmation 2 sessions with the ninth graders and offering other faith formation opportunities; working with the Trustees in maintaining the physical and financial integrity of the church; leading the staff; interpreting and articulating God's call to the church and the congregation's vision and faith; and helping equip the church to be the body of Christ in 21st century Milford.
As the primary preacher in Sunday morning worship, Rev. Adam often uses humor, drama, and music to engage the congregation in lively sermons.
In his spare time, Adam jogs, hikes, solves crossword puzzles, picks up trash by the Wepawaug River, roots for the Chicago Cubs, and reads and plays with his children.
Rev. Adam's writings have been published in Feasting on the Word (Year B, volume 2) and Feasting on the Gospels (Matthew 1-13) commentaries. His theological interests include the ethics of relationships, Soren Kierkegaard, technology, and sports. He has served as ministry supervisor of Yale Divinity School interns, and he graduated from Yale Divinity School with his Master of Divinity degree three years after receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from Yale College. Adam was raised mostly in the Midwest and Florida by two Hoosiers who are now retired in Wisconsin--his mother, Janice, who sings in her church choir and the a cappella singing group, the Cheddar Chicks, and his father, the Rev. Earl Eckhart, who ushers at church and works on his model railroad at home.
Rev. Adam is married to Rev. M. Ashley Grant, First UCC's Associate Pastor. They have four energetic children whose sugar intake they attempt to restrict, usually unsuccessfully, during coffee hour.
